  • Birkbeck, University of London
    London, United Kingdom
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences offers undergraduate degrees (face-to-face and via distance learning) and postgraduate degrees, in an environment of active research. In 2008, alongside our UCL colleagues, our joint research was ranked third of all Environment and Earth Science departments in the UK and one of only three to have an average score higher that 3.0 in the Research Assessment Exercise. We will have a joint REF submission with UCL Earth Sciences in 2014. Teaching: We offer the only distance learning degrees and certificates that are supported by full video footage of lectures streamed over the web supported by digital lecture notes (BSc Geology, BSc Earth Sciences, BSc Environmental Geology, BSc Planetary Sciences with Astronomy, plus certificates). Students can study from overseas, and over 3 years (UCAS entry), 4 and 6 years. Research: We have 13 active research grants amongst our 9 academic staff (5 NERC grants, 3 Leverhulme grants, 2 National Geographic grants, 1 STFC grant, 1 DEFRA grant and 1 Royal Society grant).
  • The Open University
    Milton Keynes, United Kingdom
At The Open University, we are proud to have been leading the way on teaching Earth and Environmental Sciences using flexible, distance and online learning methods over the past 50 years. We offer online degrees in Environmental Science, Geography and Environmental Science, and Natural Science (specialising in Earth or Environmental Science), which you can study at a variable pace and place that suits your needs. Our Environmental Science degree is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES) and the Chartered Institution of Waste and Environmental Management (CIWEM). Our courses will provide you with a solid scientific basis on which to develop a range of practical and field-based skills, core employability skills and complete several independent research projects, each supported by a personal tutor. It goes without saying that all our courses are underpinned by our research, which is focussed on addressing key global challenges including climate change, sustainability and food security. Overall, we aim to promote a scientifically literate society that is better informed by Earth and environmental issues at local to global scales. We also offer a range of high-precision analytical and geochemical services; for further details contact STEM-EEES-enquiries@open.ac.uk.
